Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong is one of the most enchanting festivals in Thailand, known for its beautiful lights and vibrant colors. During this celebration, people gather by rivers, canals, and other bodies of water to release illuminated boat offerings, or krathongs, made from banana stalks and leaves. From above, the scene looks like an array of lights gently floating across the country’s waterways, creating a magical and unforgettable sight. I remember walking along the riverbanks, watching thousands of krathongs drift away, each carrying a wish or a hope — it felt peaceful and truly magical.

Songkran

Songkran, considered the traditional Thai New Year, is celebrated in April and is famous for its massive water fights. The festival symbolizes cleansing and washing away bad luck. Traditionally, water was poured onto Buddha statues and the elderly as a sign of respect. Nowadays, however, it has become a city-wide and village-wide celebration where everyone gets involved — don your running gear, grab a water gun, and be ready to get soaked!

Songkran was originally a three-day national holiday but soon expanded into a week-long celebration. Streets fill with smiling people splashing water everywhere. I remember spending Songkran in Bangkok with a friend — we went to Khao San Road and could not make it through the long street without being surrounded by people aiming water guns at us. Needless to say, I didn’t stay dry by the end of the night! With temperatures often reaching nearly 40 degrees Celsius in April, getting wet is actually quite refreshing.

While Songkran is all about fun and water fights, temple offerings remain an important part of the tradition. Making offerings is seen as a way to start the New Year fresh and with good intentions, blending playful celebration with spiritual reflection. Experiencing both the joyful chaos of Songkran and the serene beauty of Loy Krathong in the same year gives you a real sense of Thailand’s vibrant culture and traditions.
