Bangkok is a bustling city, but sometimes you need to escape the crowds and heat. Luckily, there are plenty of day trips and weekend getaways that let you explore history, nature, beaches, and fun activities without going too far from the capital.

If you are looking for a quick cultural escape from Bangkok, Ayutthaya is one of the best options. Just 89 km north of the capital, this ancient city once served as the Kingdom of Siam’s capital. It is filled with temples, monasteries, and ruins that tell the story of Thailand’s glorious past.

Ko Lan – Island Beaches Near Bangkok
If you’re craving a beach escape, Ko Lan near Pattaya is an easy day trip. The island has beautiful, clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for swimming and relaxing. Keep in mind that food options are limited, so bringing some takeaway snacks is a good idea.
The Green Lung
Bang Kachao, Bangkok’s Green Lung
If you are looking for an escape from the city but do not want to travel all the way to the islands, Bang Kachao is the perfect option to save both time and money.
After weeks of Bangkok’s chaos, traffic, and constant movement, I was craving a day surrounded by green. I had heard about Bang Kachao being the city’s green lung, but I did not expect it to be so peaceful and untouched. It felt hard to believe that such a calm place could exist just across the river from the concrete jungle.
I took the MRT to Khlong Toei Station and then a short taxi ride to the pier near Wat Khlong Toei Nok Temple. The MRT here in Bangkok is clean, fast, and very affordable, which makes getting around so easy. Once I reached the pier, I hopped on a longtail boat for 20 THB each way. The ride only lasted about five minutes, but it felt like crossing into another world.
As soon as I got off the boat, I was greeted by silence. No honking cars, no crowds. Just trees, small roads, and the sound of cicadas. There was a little shop right by the pier renting bikes, so I grabbed one of the city bikes and started exploring. The roads are simple and safe, and even if you take a wrong turn, you always end up back where you started.
I cycled slowly, passing temples, wooden houses, and a few locals selling food and drinks by the roadside. There was a floating market nearby, Bang Nam Phueng, which only opens on weekends, but even without it, there was plenty to see. My favourite part was just riding under the shade of tall trees, surrounded by green on every side.
Halfway through, I stopped at a lovely little place called Sabaidee Café, just near the entrance by the bike rental shop. It is hidden among plants, with both indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered an iced coffee, sat outside, and listened to the sounds of the forest. For a moment, I forgot I was still in Bangkok.
Bike rentals cost between 80 and 100 THB. They asked for an ID, but I preferred not to leave mine, so they just took a photo of it instead, which was perfectly fine.
Visiting Bang Kachao was one of those simple yet memorable experiences that remind you how important it is to slow down. It was the perfect escape from the busy city, calm, green, and full of life. If you ever need a breath of fresh air without leaving Bangkok, this is the place to go. I would definitely come back the next time I need to recharge and disconnect for a while.
Siam Amazing Park – Fun for the Whole Family
For a fun alternative to temples or beaches, Siam Amazing Park combines a massive amusement park with a water park. It’s great for thrill rides, pool lounging, and family-friendly activities. Tickets can be booked online via Klook or GetYourGuide, often including an international buffet lunch.
Koh Samed – Beaches, Food & Tips
Koh Samed is a beautiful island and national park, only three hours from Bangkok. It’s calm, characterized by white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
Getting There
To get there, take a minivan to Rayong. You can book via 12Go or BookAway, departing from either Ekkamai or Mochit New Van Terminal depending on your location. Tickets typically include the ferry. Costs start from 375 THB for a bus and ferry or up to 799 THB for a van and speedboat, which is slightly quicker.
Note: Foreign tourists must pay a National Park fee at the ferry station: 200 THB for adults, 100 THB for children. Make sure to have cash.
Where to Stay
The most popular area is Sae Kaew Beach, where I stayed. It offers plenty of beach bars, cafés, restaurants, and street food. Just 200 meters from the beach entrance, you can find stalls selling typical Thai dishes at low prices, such as grilled fish, pad see ew, and papaya salad. <!– Insert image here –>

Another area is Ao Prao Beach, the only west-facing beach on the island. It’s more secluded and perfect for couples or those seeking calm. Sunset here is magical. Accommodation is mostly resorts or villas, often more expensive than the Sae Kaew area.
Food & Drinks
Koh Samed is great for beach clubs — many offer sun loungers and umbrellas if you order a drink or meal. My favorite coffee spot was Sawasdee Coco, with its white décor, scenic views, and surfboard-themed entrance.
For smoothies, Local Smoothie near the pier serves freshly squeezed fruit smoothies for only 80 THB — absolutely delicious!
Getting Around the Island
You can rent a scooter or wait for a songthaew to pick you up. The island is small, and pricing depends on the number of passengers. Timetables are usually displayed at stops, which makes planning easier.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re chasing history, waterfalls, beaches, or amusement park fun, Bangkok is a great starting point for day trips and weekend getaways. Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi offer rich culture and nature, while Ko Lan and Siam Amazing Park are perfect for relaxation and adventure. Koh Samed combines beautiful beaches, local cuisine, and peaceful spots for sunset. Each trip gives you a chance to escape the city and experience more of what Thailand has to offer.
